Warp Mechanics & Other Things We Don’t Know About

    Posted: 10 Dec 2019 06:46 PM PST

Content comes in all shapes and sizes. Long post ahead, but if you're the thoughtful type, come on in!

The warp drive mechanic as it is rendered in EVE is very intriguing. What happens? "You push the button, and it goes?!" Right? But how…and why? Full disclosure, I am not an astrophysicist. I am a licensed engineer with a lifelong fascination in this particular idea; the idea of FTL travel.

So how does it work? Before we can even begin to engineer something like a warp drive, we would have to fundamentally understand why it would work. The end result being something that seemingly breaks the laws of physics. My understanding of those laws being that the amount of energy required to accelerate a mass in space-time to the speed of light would be infinity, an unachievable asymptote. So…hard stop, right? Let's look at space-time. (Real physicists can jump in at any time if I'm off base)

Up until very recently in our understanding of the universe, space and time were thought of as two separate things. I think it's useful to look at them separately at first. Space, the volume of the cosmos, is getting bigger. But it's not just getting bigger by adding more at the edges. The volume of space itself is stretching. That's the idea behind Hubble's Law. This understanding of space informs what we know of as entropy; often interpreted as the degree of disorder or randomness in the system. If the volume enclosing a perfect singularity a matter were allowed to expand forever, the energy would increasingly express itself in infinitely different vectors. The energy hasn't left the system after all. (But how small is that initial volume? Infinity small? If it gets infinity big about a true singularity, has anything changed? …and other topics for other nights!)

Time on the other hand has historically been thought of as just sort of there; the result of living in a cause-then-effect universe. However, as we ventured into space ourselves and spent several centuries pondering what we've observed from here, we noticed something neat about time. It doesn't flow at the same rate everywhere! If a man had two clocks that were hypothetically synchronized in perpetuity, and he sent one to space for a year, when it came back, the clock that had been in space would have recorded the passage of MORE time than the one that had stayed behind. Space agencies have to engineer their software and hardware to account for the discrepancy. Putting space and time back together, we now understand that gravity deforms space and restricts the free passage of time. That's where we get those graphic depictions of planets looking like balls on a sheet. A black hole then deforms space to an unbelievable degree. At anything approaching an infinite degree, the flow of time then could then be said to be approaching zero. A place in space with no time surrounded by some measurable volume of space where the mass effect is not zero, but it's not big either. Time at the edges of this volume (still within the event horizon?) would flow, but extremely slowly relative to an outside being's perception.

OK…points and volumes, things I can work with. Could space be deformed sufficiently enough along a line to create a cylindrical volume of measurable diameter that experiences less and less time the closer you get to its axis? "But wouldn't you just get stuck in that cylindrical volume forever, like in a black hole?" I don't think so, because in the case of a "linearity", two points in space are connected by a line along which time effectively does not exist. This presupposes of course that the linearity is finite in length. Engineering will need to know that one of these days. If a hypothetical point mass of vector A and initial velocity X encounters a measurable distance of non-time, the point mass could be said to traverse the non-time distance instantaneously from the standpoint of our observation. To expand that into the macro universe would be to say that a mass whose radius perpendicular to the line of non-time was sufficiently small in proportion to the time field effect of the linearity measured normal to non-time were to encounter a span of non-time aligned to its vector would traverse the non-time span in something a little longer than instantaneously. IKR?

I can imagine that the ends of the non-time cylinder would actually be conical, like if you sharpened a pencil at both ends. The surface of that pencil then would mark the transition from non-time space to space-time. And like the lead poking out of the ends, an object of some radius would encounter this boundary with increasing severity as one observes closer to the points. But we don't want the thing of measurable radius to be sharpened off like the rest of the pencil. In other words a contiguous object of measurable radius normal to non-time would be partially within space time and partially within non-time space at some instant. Thankfully for us in the macro world, that transition boundary is a gradient. EVE doesn't have a friction in space. EVE has friction in time!

So now all we have to do is figure out how to project a linearity across a finite distance, perhaps corresponding to the projection attenuation radius of something like a gate…

    Discuss.

I hope CCP monitors the Hypernet for RMT/Bot money launders

    Posted: 10 Dec 2019 10:38 PM PST

So I realized pretty quickly that it is very easy to launder RMT/Bot money with the new Hypernet. I hope CCP did too and is tracking unusual raffles, but I doubt it. Even so with all the people bidding on dumb raffles because they are dumb and giving the botters plausible deniability, there is probably a great deal of RMT/Bot money laundering going on right now hiding in plain sight. Hope CCP proves me wrong though and has a method in place to catch these people.

    Therabois : 2019 Recap

    Posted: 10 Dec 2019 04:12 PM PST

TLDR: I invite all pilots that have been on a grid with WE FORM V0LTA in 2019 to link their most memorable, unique experiences with a short first hand account of the event. All links welcome!

    My top 3:

    1. Goonswarm deployment May, 2019

During the weekend of their deployment, working with DPCI and a few other entities, we managed to secure over 500b in killmails within 48hrs. The Saturday to Sunday of non-stop dropping, gating capitals freely in Delve because of fatigue and killing an Erebus on the 1DQ1-A Keepstar with 600+ docked was the most INSANE chain of events I have ever experienced in EVE.

    1. The free Nyx

While killing a tackled Nyx in Colbalt Edge the pilot ejected from the ship and left us in comms scrambling to come up with a plan to secure the hull. After getting a pilot into the Nyx and assessing the fit we managed to get the ship safely cloaked, only after being hunted for an hour with tackle landing on the stolen nyx and jumping to an out cyno seconds before getting tackled.

    1. Attempting to fight the umbrella

With the umbrella meta we have attempted to come up with comps that can fight the blob of supers. One of my favorite all time doctrines was the 1mn Shield Kiki. Combined with command destroyers we were able to have some incredible fights, tanking the full force of the umbrella.

Shout out to the content creators in V0LTA and the pilots of New Eden that undock. Thank you for an amazing year of battle reports and experiences.

Cheers to 2020 - Applying pressure to the giants of EVE and continuing to make Nullsec dangerous and fun.

    >>All V0LTA meme's encouraged<<

    Houston, we have a problem.

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 12:36 AM PST

    Disconnects! Disconnects! Disconnects!

It was bad after the last two or patches but after yesterday, its INSANE! Possibly happening because of the hypernet load,

Disconnects are getting to be an hourly or more frequent happening!

Not cool! Especially depending on what you are doing and where.

CCP: Your new wallet isn't very good.

    Posted: 10 Dec 2019 07:38 AM PST

Alot of wasted space, feels like it was designed for a tablet. My windows no longer fit on my smaller 3rd moniter. Market orders being moved to a seperate window is a pita and seems unnecessary. Market transactions used to have it's own tab on top which blinked when I sold something, no longer an option. No wallet settings anymore to set what blinks and when. Hurt my ability to feel on top of my market flow of what I was selling and how often. Overview is seems inaccurate and is completely useless across three accounts who use a corp wallet to trade. I will say I like the idea of your little pie chart, but worthless to me in it's current form. Maybe that should have had it's own window instead of market orders...

I'm sure other traders can point out other annoyances.

On the other hand I like the hypernet (if not the added local spam).

    Shield vs armor nyx.

    Posted: 10 Dec 2019 04:54 PM PST

So i was wondering which one is better. Part of a small null alliance and we dont get those big ass capital escalations. Most ive seen are a couple of dreads jumping one of our freshly built mining flagship "the rorqual" ( i know, we dont have a locust fleet going.... shame on us ) So i decided to get a super even tho i am not really that eager to use it, as you have a painted target on your back, but hey if it benefits morale and provides some sort of safety for my alliance, why not. So i got the standard armor brick tanked fit nyx, and a friend of my mine suggested i go shield Massive dps and you can use it for ratting aswell. Downside is that you have an active tank and if you drained your fucked. So you guys for a shield nyx or against (reasons :( )

Not sure whether my new exploration focused character has a place in any corp.

    Posted: 10 Dec 2019 08:49 PM PST

I returned to eve after being away for 7 years and I can't reach my old account since its tied to an email that I can't remember password for, so I started a new account. All I did in my previous account was pve, a little trading, and some minor pvp, so I'm fairly ignorant on how the rest of the game works.

I decided to try out exploration and I'm enjoying the risk and reward dynamic of exploring wormholes so far, but since my skill queue is going to be focused on scanning and maybe trade, I'm not sure if there will be a place in any corp for my character. I guess I could become a scout of sorts but it'll be awhile before I can get into something with a covert ops cloak and I don't own a mic to be a good tackle scout. I also wouldn't hold it against people being suspicious of a one week account that isn't a brand new newbie, so I find it hard to think of a good reason for any corp to accept me.

Should I just be solo for awhile, or is there a way I can be useful to a good corp without having to buy a mic?

Highly Skilled TEST Player gets killed by mega unskilled lucky player.

    Posted: 10 Dec 2019 04:32 AM PST

So I just logged into Esoteria. I logged off there Sunday when I last played during the Streamfleet Charity stream in an Orthrus that was gifted to me by a TEST player after I 1v1'd his Orthrus in my Cynabal and lost. I just wanted to get back to Thera quickly through a Paragon Soul hole, despite being logged in for only 5 minutes, a TEST Artisan gatecamper quickly Ansiblex'd a RR Proteus, Broadsword, Daredevil and Boost Loki ahead of my Orthrus and I jumped into him with the Orthrus.

I knew I wouldn't be able to break the Daredevil with both Loki and Proteus reps already pre-applied to it, and with links from both the Proteus and Loki it would definately not die. So I try my luck on the RR Loki hoping that since he's quad boxing he won't be fast enough to swap the Proteus' reps to it. Sure enough, he never reps his Loki, or turns on it's active tank and it dies. https://zkillboard.com/kill/80372982/

My Orthrus then of course falls to the Proteus+Daredevil+Broadsword. Bizarrely, he then informs me of how lucky I was.

    The Fun Police!

Unfortunately for the fun police, the Loki was worth 3x the value of my Orthrus and he lost SP! Post heartwarming roaming stories you had today friends.

    Hypernet Offers showing up wrong

    Posted: 10 Dec 2019 11:48 PM PST

Why are the offers sorted in descending order of their prices, shouldn't they be sorted in ascending order? All I can see is overpriced offers on hypernet and I've to refresh again and again before the green ones start showing up.

Is there any way to fix this? Is there any option to view only green hypernet offers on a specific item? #CCPLZ

"Fixed a loophole which allowed moving items into containers within the delivery hangar in an Upwell Structure." CCP please revert

    Posted: 10 Dec 2019 03:45 AM PST

This "bug" was the best thing ever for inventory management. Having tons of containers in a seperate folder than your main inventory is super nice. Not only does it look cleaner, it prevents any and all "repackage all" mistakes.

Having a dozen containers filled with hundreds of different stacks each be able to spit out their contents and mix it all up when you're repackagings a bunch of items for re-sale is one of the most annoying things that could happen. One misclick and a second of not paying attention and suddenly you're spending the next hour(s) re-sorting it all.

This bug was an useful feature. Please revert it to how it was or give us a seperate "containers only" hangar with the same functionality.
