    A discussion of Autarky is Anathema to Free Trade (AAFT)

    In a recent Devblog there was a claim that Autarky is Anathema to Free Trade (AAFT). I wanted to make this post to bring this community up to speed on the important context that this principle requires for accurate comprehension.

    I think most reasonable people believe AAFT sounds at least a little silly, just say it out loud after a few drinks, see if you snicker. Almost reminds you of "fart" if you're in the right mindset. We'll get to that shortly.

    Disregarding any feelings on the concept or truthiness of AAFT itself, what I'm sure of is that everyone finds extremely silly the precept which is a more specific and aggressive expression of AAFT: Sophisticated Human Activity Requires Terminating Autarky Swiftly Systemwide (SHARTASS).

    Lately, it seems that CCP has bought into SHARTASS and, within the last year or so, in a big way. You can see it in the mineral changes, the mining nerfs, and it certainly plays a big part in the upcoming ESS changes. Clearly, CCP thinks Autarky Seriously Sucks (ASS).

    The problem is that those of us in the industry can easily recognize these tired and dated concepts from a mile away. We know exactly what they mean. Not to toot my own horn here, but you could say I'm an expert at looking at ASS. We also know, as dedicated researchers of ASS, and associated backend ASS curves, that after liberal implementation of SHARTASS within any system, the conclusion is clearly Systemic Human Autarky Ruins The Economy Designed On Nyquil (SHARTED-ON). In other words, if you think a little autarky is a big problem then your economy is likely broken, but I digress.

    Once it was learned through ASS research that a SHARTASS precedes SHARTED-ON the conclusions were refined into an understanding that Fighting Autarky Retards The Economic System (FARTES).

    Before we go much further I have to bring in a concept from another domain, and its a fairly benign one that I think everyone here could agree with: Games Oughta Not Abrogate Dopamine Secretion (GONADS). We're probably all quite pro GONADS, and if you ask anyone at CCP I'm sure they'd say the same thing. You might even say we all live for GONADS in one way or another.

    Now, I think the disagreement that's going to define the next 6 to 12 months of player-developer relations is the widely accepted agreeability of GONADS clashing with the ASS crack between CCP's pro SHARTASS position and the counterpoints brought by SHARTED-ON players. I predict that once the community has digested CCP's recent and future changes, and once the players have seen enough SHARTASS, the average player opinion will clearly resemble FARTES.

    Personally, I hope to see a departure from SHARTASS as a policy because after reading through the known details of the new ESS and considering the future implications in my own potential experience I can strongly say I'm Not Using That Shit (NUTS).

    To close, I think FARTES, and I think the focus of this ESS as a solution to the "problem" of low friction income (happily granting that bots may be holding the faucets far too open) along with the elimination of tenable local basic resource gathering is feeding my growing frustration that CCP can't look at the state of the rest of the game's dated PVE activities and join me in my love for the idea of Fixing Everything Else Too (FEET) because Partaking In Those Things Sucks (PITTS). To put it simply, CCP should get into Raising Every Activities Replayability (REAR) instead of doubling down on SHARTASS.

    Who else among you dream of FEET?
