Is Eve playable as a casual Alpha?

    Posted: 25 Dec 2019 11:09 PM PST

I have always loved playing eve, but I was always trying to put more time than I have into it. I would like to go about it in a different way this time and try it a bit more casual.

I like to explore and relic scan the most, make money, buy backup/better ships, explore more dangerous space. Eventually I would like to learn some pvp.

I have a character that was omega in the past and has reached the skill point cap for alpha, so would it be worth making a whole new character?

Also, a side note, has anyone played eve echoes, and if so, what is your opinion on that as Eve?

Seeming as tis the season to be jolly and this sub reddit is usually filled with complaining and misery lets take a minute to say what were happy about in the game we all love (to hate)... EVE Online.

Personally, I'm glad Team Talos has continually delivered changes as promised. They might not be the ground breaking game changing releases a lot of us are after, but its certainly a step in the right direction.

    Thanks Team Talos,

    Happy Christmas.

Convince me I'm wrong: It makes no sense to buy your own hypernet tickets

    Posted: 26 Dec 2019 12:19 AM PST

Summary: I've seen a lot of posts from people who perhaps don't fully understand how raffles work and therefore think it's a good idea to put up a hypernet offer and then buy some tickets yourself. I've had people saying that it is a scam and that CCP perhaps shouldn't allow this. There may well be psychological reasons to do that (creating a perception of scarcity so other people think the tickets are in demand and buy them) but I'm completely sure that from a pure ISK point of view if you raffle something, you would be better off not buying tickets as I will demonstrate below. If you think otherwise, please try to convince me otherwise, but don't just say something like "well everyone does it so there must be a good reason" - Las Vegas and similar places are built on people not taking the most best rational decisions when it comes to gambling, so that's not a compelling argument. I apologise for the length of this explanation. there will also be maths, but everyone will survive.

Firstly the intuitive argument which we will test below: Surely if it's positive for you to put up the item then it's negative for people to buy tickets? If it's negative for them to buy tickets, then it's negative for you to buy tickets because the rules of the raffle are the same for you as for them. In other words, your best strategy is always either to put the item up for raffle and buy no tickets or not to put the item up at all.

The maths: to evaluate competing strategies in a game which involves chance, you need to calculate the "Expected Value". This is simply the sum of all the possible payoffs, weighted by the probability of each payoff.

In this example in each case for simplicity imagine I have an item worth 2000 and I'm selling 200 tickets for 11 each. We'll ignore the hypercore costs and taxes because I can't be bothered to look up how they work and anyway they are the same in each scenario so add a bit of complexity to the calculation but don't affect the outcome of the analysis. They will make the actual ISK outcome a bit worse in each case.

SCENARIO 1: I simply raffle the item and buy no tickets. I collect 200*11=2200 from the tickets and someone gets my item so my EV is 2200-2000=200. There's only one outcome so we don't need to weight by probability.

SCENARIO 2: I buy all the tickets. I collect 0 from the tickets (I can't make money by giving myself money) and keep my Item, so my EV is 0 (I had the item before and I still have it and no money has changed hands).

SCENARIO 3: I buy half the tickets. In this case, I collect 1100 from tickets (I don't get money from tickets I sell to myself remember), and half the time I win and keep my ship and half the time someone else wins it so I have to give it up.

Therefore my payoff when I win is 1100 (I don't gain an extra ship I just get to keep the one I have and the money from the rest of the tickets) and 1100-2000 = -900 when I lose (because I get the money but lose the ship).

    EV = (0.5 * 1100) - (0.5 * 900) = 100

… so it's worse (from a pure ISK point of view) to buy some tickets than no tickets. If you plot all the options you can clearly see that the maximum expected value is to buy no tickets.

    Corporation for returning player?

    Posted: 25 Dec 2019 08:42 AM PST

I was a day one player and stopped when the Titans were introduced for personal reasons.

Thanks to EVE Echoes I got in touch with the EVE universe again and re-started playing on PC.

I'm looking for a Corporation (in GMT+1 timezone) to settle on, to have a footing in low sec. I'm mildly interested in PVP, I liked especially bounty hunting and harassing toxic PVPers that prey on low-equipped newbs.

In my previous years in EVE, I was an Interceptor Squadron Commander in Stain. I don't know if I want that kind of hardocore involvement. Right now what I'd like are friendly people to mess up with and regain the ropes of the game.

    Thanks!
