    EVE Vegas 2020 Update - COVID-19 Edition

    Posted: 18 Jul 2020 11:35 AM PDT

    Hello, fellow EVE nerds!

Over the course of the last few months, the EVE Vegas 2020 planning committee has been tracking the development of the COVID-19 pandemic, and continually assessing whether we are able to host the event we'd originally been planning. We are just three months away from Vegas 2020, and we're now ready to give you an update on our plans in the face of such a challenging period for everyone.

Starting off with the bad news, our planned dinner and drinks on Friday Oct. 23 will no longer be possible. Unfortunately, trying to fit several hundred nerds into a dinner hall environment simply does not allow for the physical distancing measures in place across both the US and many other countries around the world. As a result of the dinner cancellation, we will be halting the sale of any remaining tickets via our eventbrite page.

We also appreciate that in the current climate, attending EVE Vegas may not be an option for some people for a number of different reasons. As such, we will also be issuing a partial refund for any purchased tickets for this event, though we have made some non-refundable deposits that mean we can't provide a full refund to everyone who bought a ticket and supported EVE Vegas 2020.

The good news is that, after some significant discussion with Caesar's Hotels, we have managed to retain our block of hotel rooms within Bally's Las Vegas at this time. Put simply, this means anyone who would still like to visit Vegas and meet one another over the weekend has that option available. The block is also still taking new bookings, so if you are still looking to make a trip that weekend and haven't already organised your hotel situation, head on over to our website and use the booking link there.

Despite the fast-changing nature of the year so far, we are still looking into a number of opportunities to have some sort of get-together or other event during the weekend. As we draw closer to EVE Vegas 2020, we will update you again on what, if any, events are possible.

Finally, we'd like to thank the entire CCP community team for their support during this time, and specifically CCPs Convict and Goodfella for their help in resolving some of the more major bumps in the road.

    The Proving Grinds

    Posted: 18 Jul 2020 09:03 AM PDT

    -long post warning-

This is single handedly the best worst thing that happened to EvE. We were on the verge of greatness, we were this close.

And yet, the way it was implemented leaves a lot to be desired and kinda makes one wonder how much thought was actually put into this.

    EvE:Classic

Hello there R14 grind, no one fucking missed you. There´s plenty of stories out there about people ruining their lives doing the legendary WoW Vanilla R14 grind, and yet CCP has decided to utilize basically the very same formula for this event.

I can´t fathom why would the results not be measured by some sort of an ELO or MMR as opposed to just the raw number of wins. I thought the point of this event was to find the most skilled pilots, not the ones that can dedicate the biggest amount of man hours to a pointless grind.

Yes, an MMR in EvE seems unthinkable. But a few years ago instanced PvP was also unthinkable, and voila, here we are.

Having an MMR would solve quite a few issues:

It would insure that it would indeed be the most skilled pilots topping the charts (not saying this is not currently the case), since in order to stay on top you would have to consistently perform against pilots of similar skill level, instead of stomping newbies and shitfits 75 percent of the time.

It would also make sure that the lower skilled pilots would be matched against opponents of their own skill instead of getting vaporized in 30 seconds by stabbers or un-killable caracals (you know who you are :D), probably prolonging their interest in the event. But as things stand I can´t see any casual pilots really sticking with it, as most of the time they lose the match the moment they pop the filament.

This would overall make the event a lot more enjoyable for everyone in my opinion. The try hards could try hard against other try hards for prizes, while the midfield and newbie pilots could go ahead and have some quick instanced PvP for fun against people they can actually beat.

    The Purple fever

From the very own CCP´s mouth we learned that they thought the turbo blinged Ikitursas were a problem in the first iteration of abyssal PvP. It would be fair to assume that bling and implants would not be allowed in this event then, right? Wrong

So now we are back to turbo blinged un-killable Mallers and Caracals, but at the very least they are not that prevalent. Yet.

At any rate, in my opinion those events should be limited to T2 fits and fitting implants only, especially if some sort of an MMR were to be introduced. Say what you want about P2W, but spamming turbo blinged comps will net you overall more consistent results than T2 fitted comps. Notwithstanding the fact that no matter how good you are, you simply aren´t beating an opponent of equal skill that is sitting in a much more expensive ship. This would make it impossible to reach the higher brackets without resulting to turbo bling, which is basically the current abyssal issue that CCP wanted to avoid in the first place.

    Chasing the Rotten carrot

If you put up with this grind for 3 months you might get a chance at getting a 50 dollar voucher AND free shipping (this is the real prize tbf), so you can get your very own FREE EvE mug to drinks your tears from!

OR get one of the relatively low quality 3D printed models (they are about 50 bucks as well btw).

Or you could, you know, work for 3 hours and buy them? I virtually can´t fathom why would anyone want to willingly put up with this grind.

Roaming is dead (more dead than previously)

Who are you even supposed to PvP against out in normal space for the duration of this thing? A sizeable chunk of the already small eLItE smol scale/solo playerbase is taking part in these. I can see how there is virtually no one out there to actually roam against except Gila bots and Muninn blobs, most of which are around Delve anyway.

This entire thing is TOO DAMN LONG. 3 months of this?

I can understand the mini events that last a weekend, but the cruiser one is like 10 days??? And stuff is happening every weekend? People will burn the fuck out.

Why not have one or two events per month during some specific weekends, to make it a fun new activity, but not completely overhaul the way PvP in EvE works?

The rule set (this is just my personal opinion)

    - Everyone knows scripted ewar is cancer, just remove it

    - Make the arena bigger so that comps that enter the arena without an intention of forcing a win get punished (ala noprop caracals that can hit you anywhere)

    - I personally am not a fan of the timeout and would much rather see some other mechanic that rewards active comps and punishes passive ones, we want this to be fun after all, right?

    - Maybe some sort of a capture point spawning late in the match, that has to be captured over the course of say, a minute or two, and forces the ships to contest a small zone until there are no enemy ships left within it? Just a random idea, basically anything that would discourage noprop bricks that just sit there and do nothing.

    TL,DR:

    Introduce MMR

Fittings up to T2, no implants or drugs (maybe CPU and PG ones only)

Give people something tangible to chase instead of the current "tokens of gratitude" (unique unsellable skins are a good idea, +1 on that)

Shorten it and make it less frequent to prevent people burning out and actually enabling them to have a life, while also not butchering the normal TQ PVP

    RANT OVER

The war continued in Stain today, as the locals snag themselves a Phorde levi, which in turn is a HK alt. They have done what all the minions of the CFC could not up to this date, win the objective and do it isk positive.

Question on picking a wormhole to live in.

    Posted: 18 Jul 2020 01:37 PM PDT

Hey guys I am looking at setting up shop in a wormhole solo and need help figuring out a few things.

    1) being a solo player, how concerned do I need to be about being evicted or removed by a larger group of players, and what class should I be looking to setup in? I was thinking C3, but I don't know how popular they are or what chance I would have at finding one for myself.

    2) once I've decided what class I'm looking for how can I determine if the structures inside are being used actively or are just remaining from past residents?

    3) lastly is there a reason to choose a structure other than a citadel to base out of? I plan on setting up PI and running sites primarily but if there's a good reason to have a refinery or engineering complex I'd do it over citadel.

    Thank you guys!
