Eve Online The great /r/eve overhaul of 2021

The great /r/eve overhaul of 2021

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 04:10 PM PST

    Hey all,

This year I'd like to present to you a long long overdue overhaul of /r/Eve. The time feels right with Reddit pushing their awful new web layout, to take out the brush and start cleaning the cobwebs out of the subreddit.

There's a lot of get through so let's crack on

    New regular recurring threads
The familiar "No Stupid Questions" thread will still be appearing every Thursday and be pinned for a week at a time.
    In addition we're adding;

    • Kill of the Week (Post/brag about your kills)
    • Weekly Recruitment Thread (Post your corps recruitment or advertise yourself to corps)
    • Meme Monday (More on this later)
    • Shameless Saturday (Self promotion - more further down)

Friendly Friday and Rant Tuesday have been community posts and we've opted to leave them in the community realm for now so we don't steal any thunder. If people want we can schedule them as Automoderator posts.

    Meme Rule Update
The official stance in the sidebar is low quality memes aren't allowed. Since the latest war came out we relaxed this rule via our moderation policy.

Going forward we want to draw the lines on memes so it's completely clear what the situation is. Memes remain a marmite topic and we want to provide a space for those who enjoy them, and differentiate between high quality shitposting and run of the mill image macros.

    The situation is as thus;

    • High quality memes - Memes created using EVE Online assets, advanced edits on gifs/images/videos, creative works, etc can be posted at any time.
    • Regular memes, reaction gifs, image macros, crude edits, etc are welcome to be posted in the Meme Monday thread.
    • Propaganda has it's own separate flair but quality will be considered and really should only be used for good wholemeal propaganda and not as a way to try and offload your bad meme to bypass the rules.

There will also be a filter option for various flairs so you can filter out memes, or filter to just memes - whatever your take.

Memes of any quality are welcome as comments at any time. Therefore if there's a big battle going on, you can dump your quick hot shit directly into comments instead of making a new thread.

We'll review the situation a few months on to see how it's going.

    Streamer/Content Creator Rules

Reddit as a website has a set of rules and guidelines for self promotion which should be checked here.

With the above in mind, we'd like to make it easy for people to promote their personal projects without having to worry about posts being removed, and without the subreddit becoming dominated by self promotion.

Enter Shameless Saturday. Every Saturday users are free to post and promote their own content. This can be twitch streams, podcasts, blogs, artwork whatever.

There will be a stickied thread where people can link their content. The thread will be organised in contest mode meaning the comments will be randomised and not influenced by upvotes.

    Note that News Articles or Streams for specific large events may be permissible on other days. If in doubt, consider the following;

    • Your Reddit account should be a month old and have an active history on /r/eve
    • You must adhere to Reddits guidelines, as such for every piece of self promotion you post, you should have 9 other comments/posts on the website.
    • You should only promote your content once every 7 day period, for example if you post on Monday, you should not post your own content again until the following Monday.

    Flairs

User flair has been an issue for a while with our bot falling over sometime in 2019 and never recovering. Adding and creating user flair is rather tedious and uses limited space on the Reddit stylesheet.

That said, I'm committing myself to manually adding and updating new users flairs and will be posting roughly monthly to take new flair requests for Corps/Alliances/Media Outlets/User Groups.

There'll be a top comment on this thread that people can reply to. The request should include a small image representing your group, as well as the text you want. Flair requests may be declined if your group is too small/inactive and/or if the image or text is inappropriate. Existing user flairs of inactive groups may be removed to make space for new ones if necessary.

Post flairs are going to be introduced and will be mandatory for all new posts. This will come alongside a flair filtering feature which should be rolled out later this month. This should let users find content they want to view and filter out stuff they don't want to view.

We think we've comprehensively covered most submissions, but if you think we've missed any categories just let us know in the comments or via modmail.

    Content Policy

Content policy for EVE will remain largely as it is unless the userbase demands otherwise. There's been consideration as to whether to change the rules to be stricter on things like personal attacks, insults to groups/individuals, etc and for now no changes are being made.

Currently we already ban and delete comments that are abhorrently toxic, racist, etc, and continue to be vigilant on anything that threatens a persons IRL information. We have also cracked down on terminology used by a portion of EVE players that is unsavory.

The reason the ruleset has remained unchanged for the moment is because though we'd like to make the subreddit more user friendly, shitslinging between groups in EVE, particularly during wartime is very much part of the game and it doesn't feel right to draw hard lines on what is and isn't acceptable.

I personally encourage discussion on the above, if there's a solid consensus from the community that could be easily reflected in the rules then we'll take it. For now though, we'll continue to monitor user reports and use those as our guide for content moderation.

Ultimately we want the subreddit to be a reflection of EVE whilst maintaining a welcoming atmosphere. It's a tricky line to walk so we do appreciate and read any feedback on this topic.

    Removal Reasons

On the topic of moderation, removal reasons should be appearing on posts in the near future. Currently removals are silent unless queried and we hope that adding reasons should help users curate their posting.

The most common removal reasons that come to mind are reposting the same content that's been recently posted, posting killmails/battle reports with no After Action Report, and posting low quality image macros.

We won't be adding removal reasons for comments due to the excess clutter it creates in threads.

    Monthly Contests

Following partnership with CCP, we hope to offer monthly competitions (or other regular contests) that will allow users to win exclusive skins and prizes. If you have any ideas for competitions or there's some kind of event you want to see then let us know in the comments. This month will see a contest going up regarding the Reddit redesign, beyond that - who knows?

Event Calendar This one's a bit early doors, but we're hoping to work with various groups and content creators to produce an interactive event calendar with all the ongoing and upcoming events in EVE Online. It'll aim to include in-game events, NPSI fleets, irl events, big streams, thunderdomes, etc, etc.

At the moment it's early in the planning stages, but once the Subreddit redesign is completed we're aiming to invest time into making this a reality. Hopefully the end goal will provide everyone with easy to access content both in and out of game.

Wiki Update The subreddits wiki and sidebar have been neglected to a degree, so expect to see updates to them both soon.

With regards to wiki content we're taking submissions for useful content for new players, old players, fitting resources, game tools, terminology, etc

We're mainly looking to update the following pages:
    * List of Reddit friendly Corporations
    * Third party tools
    * In game community channels
    * Anything else we're missing

If you know of anything worth dropping in, put a reply below the comment in the thread.

    That's all folks
That's your lot! Thanks for all your contributions in 2020, we're hoping to really improve your Reddit experience for 2021.

Some changes will be instant whereas others will appear over the coming days/weeks.

All and any feedback is welcome. Have at it!

    Imperium liberates D-W from invaders

    Posted: 07 Jan 2021 02:36 PM PST

Continuing their momentum after trapping hundreds of papi supers after the pewpew in M2, Imperium fleets liberate the NJU constellation containing 4 keepstar systems including M2 almost completely uncontested. This was followed by retaking SVM to complete the reconquest of the W-4 constellation.

Today we saw Imperium freedom fighters form up to retake D-W, the PL capitol system and home of one of the Imperium's old cap staging systems (a critical system for papi as this would be the first keepstar in delve they could attack that actually has assets inside of it). In typical fashion the Imperium fought outnumbered, and made ground quickly before papi hackers managed to get started on their own nodes. The Imperium managed to get the system down to 11% before papi (with their significantly shorter hacking times) hacked the system back to 53%, but then the nodes being captured by the Imperium started to finish bringing the system back under the control of the liberators.

You can see the hacking progress timeline here:
    https://fleetcom.space/timer-board/fozziesov-timer/xTuigaRHZ4ubeoaLd

And the battle report here with the Imperium losing 68.66b and papi losing 77.51b:
    https://br.evetools.org/br/5ff792222bab97001a3c1cfe

During this a papi carrier tried to log into the M2 camp and suffered the same fate as those that came before him:
    https://zkillboard.com/kill/89789351/

There was also whatever this is being caught by the camp:
    https://zkillboard.com/kill/89786500/

After losing the ihub papi responded by welping a small fleet into 1DQ losing another 2.59b:
    https://br.evetools.org/br/5ff7912b2bab97001a3c1cf9

    UPDATE:
Imperium forces liberate another keepstar ihub in PDE from invading forces.
A tapi Ragnarok logs in inside the M2 camp and is quickly dispatchedhttps://zkillboard.com/kill/89795110/

    UPDATE #2:
papi loses an astra in M2 and their staging fort, only bringing 12 interceptors and 12 burstceptors to defend it, no more papi structures remain in M2 to assist their trapped super fleet.

Anti-Anti-Kiting with Q-Hotkey Technique from Yumenoshima

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 12:20 AM PST

    Quick Summary

    About Me

    Why I do Q-Kite

    • My first "EVE chill" experience was in a kiting Tristan against a Dragoon in a High-Sec War.
    • That "EVE chill" experience was so extreme for me, I've been hooked on learning about kiting and anti-kiting and anti-anti-kiting.
    • My main studying material was Magical Kiting / Anti-Kiting 101 article : https://forums-archive.eveonline.com/topic/161312/
    • Then one day my corp-mate Katherine Chivahle showed me how to do Q-Kite. ( https://youtu.be/127PIHTbjxg?t=120 ) Ever since I've been hooked on experimenting with anti-anti-kiting with Q-kite! I still have not been able to master vertical Q-Kite like Katherine-san does.

How to Speed Tank & Kite with Q shortcut.

FAQ.1 How do you move around manually?

    1. While pressing shortcut Q, do the following 2-5.
    2. Move mouse to desired horizontal angle and distance.
    3. Single click.
    4. Move mouse to desired vertical angle.
    5. Single click.

You can do Step3-5 in one motion by double clicking to ignore setting vertical angle.

FAQ.2 What are those arrows coming out of enemy ships?

Those arrows indicate their future location after 10 seconds if their speed and direction persists.

FAQ.3 Using "Crossing the T" maneuver solo to stay alive.

Use your speed to stay ahead of the enemy fleet.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crossing_the_T

FAQ.4 Whilst I have understood the T maneuver, how do you keep a check on Range control. So that u don't lose point. As in do u angle towards the target or angle away?

When the target is coming towards you, angle away 45 degrees (or 135 degrees) zig zag backwards, and manually keep range. When target is running, angle towards him 45 degrees and when you get pararell with him angle towards him 45 degrees again to get in front of him, and then do the zig zag back wards again, rinse and repeat.

FAQ.5 As there are other ships on grid. How do you keep them away whilst still applying DPS to the target. If i get to close to them they may be able to scram me.

Make them chase you around in circles around the pointed target. Also, when you feel in risk always play safe!

FAQ.6 Kiting sure is easy with a snaked garmur against ab frigs! (sarcasm)

Kiting and speed tanking is about much speed as you can get! Can't kite if you are the slow guy... Also it's not just about kiting against ab frigs, it's about Anti-Anti-Kiting ... having an ability to dodge anti-kiting ships and catch a blob fleet as an annoying long point tackler.

FAQ.7 Kiting is super easy when ur in a snaked garmur all the time.

Highspeed kiting is especially fun when catching and fighting against blob fleets with baits. The "crossing the T" maneuver in the explanation page with garmur point range is extremely effective against the bait and their backups. (See example 7.1) I think high-grade snaked garmur does a good job of annoying blob fleet FCs and haven't found an alternative option for this role yet.

FAQ.8 How is Q shortcut better than double clicking in space?

When trying to catch kiters, you need to predict direction of the kiter, and use double clicking in space to try to take short-cut to catch the kiters. When using Q shortcut and tactical overlay looking top down, you can detect that the catcher is trying to take short-cut for intercept, and counter the intercept. (i.e. go the other direction to not get cautht) So I think Q shortcut serves as a counter to double clicking short-cuts maneuver in space.

    Conclusion

When you start your kiting, you'll often get intercepted by anti-kiting maneuvers and get frustrated or give up not knowing what happened. I want this article to server as a Proof Of Concept that there is a way to counter the anti-kiting maneuvers. Thank you! Fly safe!

The next M2 daily BR update

    Posted: 07 Jan 2021 07:12 PM PST

As a continuation from the other day. Here are the last two full day BRs from everyone's favorite NULL system M2-XFE.

    January 6, 2021
    https://br.evetools.org/br/5ff7caff2bab97001a3c1d1e
    Imperium - 18.3 bil --------- papi - 86.3 bil
A good chunk of papi losses from this day came from a failed dread bomb on an Imperium Titan. Imperium had a quick response to a Titan on a gate and was able to fend off the papi dread bomb.

    January 7, 2021
    https://br.evetools.org/br/5ff7cb2b2bab97001a3c1d1f
    Imperium - 980mil --------- papi - 26.5 bil
Yesterday looks to be a little less eventful, a few papi capital ships logged in, and then the usual harassments gangs that come by to visit.

Overall M2 is still the highest kill system each day!

As someone who has not played since early 16 and trying to figure out this war WTFHAPPENED TO PL SINCE I WAS GONE? Suddenly they put less Titans on the field then noted supercap giants like Brave/TEST/PHorde ect.

    Posted: 07 Jan 2021 12:49 PM PST

Like seriously? I haven't played since my old alliance, Black Legion, died in 2015. But after looking at the KM's during M2 i could hardly believe how few PL titans were there.

Then I looked at Dotlan and saw basically every corp from then is left or dead. Save snigg, hoover, and uhh dooms corp. the only other name i recognize is the mythos guys who were like a few guys and generally the least active corp in bl even before scraf got kicked.

If you had said "In 5 years PL will still be around, but a much weaker force then Horde, TEST, BRAVE" ect. , Oh, and Elo Knight and Garth Telkin are both in goons now, fighting a coalition where Horde, TEST, and NC contribute most of the forces" People would think you are crazy.

What Not To Do When At War

    Posted: 07 Jan 2021 05:01 AM PST

I'm nobody of consequence. At best, I'm an armchair general obsessed with Eve content. But recent events have made me boggle so hard at my keyboard that I can't hold my spaghetti in my pocket anymore, because there's an amazing story being told. That story is a stunning thesis in strategy constructed in a geopolitical war game by TEST. The story is called What Not To Do When At War. If I were to give a piece of advice worth its weight in gold to any aspiring CEO, FC, or video game spaceship leader of any kind, it would be: Do the exact opposite of what TEST does in everything and you'll be fine.

Okay, you think I'm exaggerating. Maybe you think I'm just propaganda posting or have a hate boner for some people I've never met. Not so, gentle reader. Let me break it down for you piece by piece. Let me slather you in hot globs of psychopathic Eve truth.

    1) War Aims

This is an obvious one and has been pointed out before, so I'll be brief, but it ties into everything else. There are two kinds of objectives you can set out for yourself when declaring war. Ones where you determine the criteria for success and ones where the enemy does. It's the difference between conquest and occupation, and the first one is infinitely preferable to me as the attacker, and the latter to the defender. That's a little abstract, so examples:

If I say my war aim is to destroy all enemy structures in 1DQ, I control the criteria. Success depends on my ability to get my spaceships on grid shooting lasers at buildings.

If I say my war aim is to "exterminate goons", well that's too vague - perhaps what I really mean is "No Goon sovereignty visible on the map." Do I have control over this criteria? The answer is no, not really. I can keep hitting TCUs, but so can my enemy, and I don't have control over whether they log in or not, and it is doubtful I can keep them off the map *everywhere*.

Perhaps the thoughts of the TEST leadership (if, indeed, they have ever had any thoughts) were that a more flexible war aim would allow them to draw a bullseye around whatever mark they happened to hit. But if it were the case that TEST was shadowboxing, the most stupid thing they could do would be to create a situation where they were totally invested in the war. Say, by uprooting and moving to Delve.

But I think what everybody knows the real meaning of that war aim is. The real goal is to get Goons to failscade. By now it should be clear this interpretation is actually the most generous to TEST's intelligence. And now that we've clarified what the real war aim is, let's talk about why literally everything about TEST strategy was counterproductive to achieving it.

    2) Propaganda

The first thing you've got to understand about Goons is where their center of gravity is. The Goon organization is fundamentally top heavy. True, Goon line members are provided with a lot of latitude, but the core of the organization is founded on the absolute trust of a small number of people who control the organization in a top-down manner. By the way, this is why Mittens says that Horde is "the opposite of Goons".

I don't think this is even controversial to anyone who examines the organization objectively. It's worth pointing out that a lot of structure in Goons is *specifically designed to mitigate this weakness*. Consider for example the Goon dissolution of Squads into SIGs over the past few years. Why? Because insular line member groups are a long term threat to the stability of the kind of structure we're talking about.

Let me put it to you another way. The more *bottom up* an organization is, the more important *line member morale* is. The more *top down* and organization is, the more important *trust* is (between the ruling clique, line to management and management to line.)

The second thing you've got to understand is that *Goons don't actually care about Reddit.* The Goons that matter, anyway. To them, Reddit is enemy territory, or at best the public square. It's not their home, and it's not the place where they go to get information or participate in their culture. (I sympathize, frankly, because Reddit is a terrible place.) They have alternative structures of communication, which is deliberate.

But for TEST, Reddit *is* their 'home ground', so to speak. Their line members take it far more seriously. Anyone with two brain cells trying to coordinate agitprop could see that if you want to demoralize Goons, you find a way do it on *their* channels, not yours. Sure, you post morale on Reddit - but if you make Reddit the focus of your propaganda, *you can only lose*. And the bulk of TEST's agitprop was a stream of low-quality memes on Reddit, focused on Goon line member morale. Are you beginning to understand the depth of their failure?

The propaganda strategy that emerges from these facts is obvious. It should be a) focused on posing as Goon line members and/or infiltration and b) focused on channels other than Reddit, because the primary target is not actually Goon *morale* per se, it is *trust*. I'm not going to go into any more detail than that, you don't get all my thoughts for free.

    3) War Strategy

Again, let's start with a few facts. TEST is leading a loose coalition with more manpower and collectively more cash than their enemies. What's the weakness? Well, it's hard to keep a lot of disparate people united on a common goal for very long, and without direct control we can't guarantee that entire sections of our bloc may not get bored, go home or backstab us, and the longer the war goes on the greater chance this occurs.

Do we want a fast war or a long war? Do we want a war of attrition or decisive confrontations?

The answer should be obvious. We want a fast war, and we want it to be based on attrition, leveraging our superior manpower and resources. And again, TEST strategy is the perfect example of What Not to Do - engage in a protracted, slow conflict where we pass on every 50/50 engagement.

Note that our war goal is also fundamentally opposed to the kind of war we want to fight, but we can't always have everything we want. A competent strategist would have fought not like a McClellan, but like a Grant, playing aggressively and constantly swinging the hammer regardless of casualties, with standing orders to take every possible fight. (In this case, Goons actually made a mistake by criticizing PAPI for making this mistake.) Unfortunately, TEST rallied behind the penultimate McClellan.

    4) Damage Control

This is already turning into a TED talk length post (I hate TED talks), so I'll try to wrap this up here. Have you been paying attention to the TEST response to the M2 disaster? The operative word here is "detachment". It's the thing a sports coach does after the game facing the press when he exhorts the players for "doing their best". Yes, and a good time was had by all. At least we tried, right? There's no shame in that! After all, it's just a game, guys.

And there's nothing fundamentally wrong with that strategy, but here's the problem: TEST's morale is built on waging a just war. For anyone who was seriously invested in grr Goons and all that, this language is the ultimate boner-killer.

Imagine if our damage control used an alternate strategy: we could shift to fiery language and evoke feelings about the "martyrs" of M2. We could paint our line as the heroes embattled at their darkest hour. That is the kind of thing that gets people to log on.

Anyway, that's all I have to say for now - except one more thing - I'm not sure either Goons or PAPI fully anticipate how long this may go on for. I think it's going to continue for a lot longer than anyone expects. And also that this war has proven so far the most brilliant strategists in the galaxy, by far, belong to Pandemic Horde.

    Posted: 07 Jan 2021 03:31 PM PST

    Hey all!

I made a account a couple years ago... I played some months but only made some missions with a Myrmidon. The Corp I was they told me to do lots of this missions until I have enough SP to go to their base in null-sec. I stopped to play because my pc broke.

I started playing eve echoes and I am/was "hard-casual" player with 4 accs playing like 2-3hrs a day... But the magic is gone and I want to get back to real EVE.

    My questions/doubts are:

1- is industry and/or trade a viable path to a new acc?? (my current acc have 6mil SP but is a mess should I use this or not?? ). I really enjoy sheets and business part of eve 😅

2 - in this current account with a Myrmidon, how I can make safe(ish) isk as a newbie?? I know there's tons of stuff to do but I really lost where to start to be honest. But I want to do something like.. Now?? Hahha

3 - there's some corp with newbie content like 10pm utc-3?? (I'm from Brazil, already in a new small Corp but times aren't matching)

Thank you very much all :)

Wanting to take the null sec plunge

    Posted: 07 Jan 2021 02:46 PM PST

I have been mainly a high sec player in a corporation of two (me and roommate) with brief trips into low and null but I have wanted to join a group in null sec more and more lately. However I see so much hatred back and forth between the large coalitions and I worry if I join one I will instantly be despised by all the others just for joining, or if I decide to leave one I will have blacklisted myself if anyone looks at my corporation history tab when applying somewhere else. Do I just have to join and live with the consequences even if that particular corporation ends up not being the right fit and we part ways? Especially the rhetoric during this war and I really enjoy this game and don't want to start hating it because of a single line in my corporation history. I feel the "For us or against us" sentiments are making me very reluctant.
