    /u/paulharkonen made a comment on the March MER thread about why the CPI (Consumer Price Index) metric in CCP's Monthly Economic Report seemed too low. With mineral prices spiking and scarcity making most things more time consuming to acquire, it sure feels like everything is getting more expensive, but the CPI line on the MER has stayed flat. The proposed reason is that PLEX makes up a large part of the CPI, and the combination of falling PLEX prices and the very large influence of PLEX held the CPI steady despite scarcity. I've had my suspicions this was the case for a while, but today I went through and did some math to confirm this was the case.

    First things first, the CPI in EVE, like it is in reality, is calculated from the average price of a "basket of goods", weighed by a quantity modifier. The CPI data in the MER is defined in 2 CSV files, IndexBaskets.CSV, which defines what specific items make up the basket of goods, and EconomyIndiciesDetails.CSV, which contains aggregated sub-basket pricing data at a monthly aggregated level. Everything in IndexBaskets.CSV with "CPI" for a index basket value is factored into CPI calculations. The whole list of items is very long, but the items/categories of index are these.

    These are PLEX/PLEX derived/NEX shop items, and PLEX is a special case because unlike 99% of other items in EVE, PLEX can not be created by in game activity. Someone somewhere has to give legal tender to CCP in order to receive PLEX to turn into these items. The supply of PLEX is dictated by external non-game events, like a plex sale, or a recession, or a global pandemic preventing people from spending their disposable income on better things, or the chairwoman of the federal reserve throwing money out of a helicopter. As such, PLEX should not be grouped in with items that can be generated through gameplay. Without a flexible supply, the cost of PLEX is directly dictated by the money supply moreso than any other item in the game. Just as it happens, the money supply has been choked off by scarcity.

    So when you remove PLEX and PLEX derived items (accessories, apparel, and skins), the effects of scarcity on CPI becomes much more apparent.

    The graph above calculates CPI change from the start of blackout, which I think is a good starting point for the scarcity era. The average price of goods has increased around 5% since the start of blackout, while Nominal CPI has fallen by 10%. The feeling that everyone had that things were getting more expensive is in fact, accurate. I dare say that the felt effect is actually much higher than 5%, since this rise in prices is accompanied by a decrease in overall isk/hour and a decrease of the money supply. Boomers who lived in through the 70's or people from former Soviet states can probably relate to the experience of simultaneous rising prices and falling/stagnant wages.

    TL:DR plex shouldn't be counted as part of the CPI because you can't make it through gameplay. PLEX got cheaper because there's less isk faucet. This made CPI artificially low, shit actually is more expensive these days.

    So my account is a tad over a year old. First real day of playing was the day before Niarja fell. I've mostly been in high sec by myself. I've also ninja mined isogen in low sec for small personal stuff, competed in the Fed Grand Prix and I've lost ships while ratting to NPC's and players just not a whole lot. Of course being 8 months in high sec there has been mostly belt mining under daddy Concord's protection.

    Today I just went to do a simple level 2 high sec combat anom right in the system I started up docked in. I got there and started doing my thing when I noticed I forgot to reload my weapons before I docked up last time. Lazy I think, but reloading takes no time in my subcap. They got down to nothing and then it happened.

    My weapons cycled and came up goose egg

    I had a shit day. I'm out of work. Yesterday a guy hit my car that was parked on the street at 6am and admitted he was looking at his phone to my face. I have a condition and my insurance company is playing games with my treatment 10 days before my appointment. I missed a call from my doctor regarding the health situation because the insurance adjuster called at the same time and I accepted that call by mistake. And after all that I almost got hit by two cars in a row while in a crosswalk and the second person made eye contact before, during and after passing me.

    And now I realize I dumped my entire hold before logging out last time, ammo included. THE EAGLE SCOUT INSIDE ME IS INSANELY SCREAMING INTO A COMPLETELY INDIFFERENT VOID.

    Then I remembered I was flying Gallente and deployed my drones. My web definitely helped them make my mistake only take so much extra time. It was so simple: one system is offline so go to another. This why you have more than one weapon dummy. Got some decent tags and faction ammo too. Sure there was hardly ever any risk but man what a rollercoaster for second.

    Only thing I was missing was an escalation dropping at the end but I'm reloading and going back out. Better grab ammo too.

    So my actual question is this: Is this how all you guys do it?

    Follow up: And based on what I said and how new I am what kind of Corps should I look at because I think it's time. I'm thinking small gang preferably but I get why they're picky and am not looking for a favor just advice.

    Tl;dr: I wanna shoot more shit. Tell me what to shoot, possibly on an ongoing basis (USTZ)/where are good places to look. r/evejobs seems hit or miss

    Solo Hunting Guide?

    So 2/3 weeks ago I got out of NullSec and hooked up with a Wormhole Corp and I've loved everything so far, but one area of interest has truly piqued my interest and that is hunting. I've done some "pack hunting" as it were and it's so damn fun I want to try to understand how to hunt as a solo player.

    Are there any comprehensive guides that are still applicable to current EVE? Most I've seen are forum posts from many years ago or fight breakdowns of Frigate PvP and I would like to try understand the intricacies a bit more.

    Any help would be appreciated, thanks guys!

    Hello everyone, I just started the tutorial. I was very pleased with my 20,000ISK and thought about buying myself a shiny new Atron... but for some reason this basic frigate costs nearly half a million! What? Do you get a new ship thru the tutorial or are you expected to grind your way to 1million ISK with a corvette?
