Twitch Plays EVE New Features and Contest Finalist

    Posted: 11 Nov 2019 07:48 AM PST

Earlier this month, my team launched Twitch Plays EVE and we played EVE together for 10 days straight. It's the first Twitch Plays MMORPG and the first to use Twitch's Extension system for game inputs. The broadcast's video has an overlay that allows you to interact with a single ship. Good news, you can play EVE online without logging in. Bad news, others might be looking to sabotage your plans. We took the weekend off to rest, but we're coming back today with something for you and something for us.

We've added two exciting new features to the channel. Starting today you can join fleets! This will allow us to experience new activities and reach new places. After that it was obvious that we had to give you all the ability to hack Data and Relic sites. All we need is a fleet member to warp us to a site and then we will take over blowing up cans or getting away with the loot.

I'm also thrilled to announce that our project was selected as one of five finalists in Twitch's DevJam 2019 developer contest. They were looking for new game related extensions and they selected ours! In addition to cash prizes ($5,000 USD) for the finalists, we also get to share EVE with the larger gaming community. We also have a chance to win the grand prize of $20,000.

We have received word that Twitch's judging panel for the contest will stop by the stream today between 18:00 - 22:00 UTC (10:00 - 2:00 pm PST) to see the channel in action. It would be fantastic to have as many of you join us today and show support for this fun project. We are live now. Come play with us, https://twitch.tv/twitchplayseve

29bn BATTLE IN VENAL - PanFam vs GoTB/INIT

    Posted: 11 Nov 2019 08:18 PM PST

    Battle report: https://fleetcom.space/battlereport/pswgWe2PJmcZt9BfJ

    Defenders

    PanFam - Eagles

    Attackers

    GoTB - Muninns

    INIT - Ravens

    Third Party

    BL - Tengus

    Conifers - Bombers

    AAR:

    • A Horde US tz sig (BFL) deployed to Venal and anchored a Fort in PF-QHK.
    • GoTB pinged throughout the day to form UStz and called in Imperium. Seeing the big pings, BFL escalates to main PanFam with hours notice (got wind of it 45 mins prior).
    • Ultimately, out of the batphones, INIT showed up with booshing Ravens. Once the timer hit repair timer (15 mins prior to being online), they came to engage immediately.
    • GoTB/DARKNESS cyno'd in via a Siberian Squad FORT and stayed tethered.
    • INIT Ravens started getting tackled by PanFam squads.
    • GoTB/DARKNESS stayed tethered.
    • INIT Ravens started receiving Spike charges by PanFam Eagles.
    • GoTB/DARKNESS stayed tethered.
    • Half of INIT Ravens now dying.
    • GoTB/DARKNESS starts aligning...
    • GoTB/DARKNESS lands off INIT capsules and gets bubbled.
    • GoTB Fleet proceeds to die in Muninns, and then warps to VG-6CH gate, next door where last FC Monitor dies.

    EVE Ambience Series

    Posted: 11 Nov 2019 07:36 PM PST

Due to the upcoming hangar audio overhaul I decided to start recording 10 minute videos of the various hangars in EVE Online.

    https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLaDci_1RJNSyrNIvt_hIKEC6PNe8iDnEi

Here is the current list with 5 hangar audios but since I really sorta enjoy making these expect additional ambience later of different things like gates, and rat chatter (already recorded 2 Serpentis ones, just am too tired to upload them right now!)

I also know that in my Minmatar one I end up receiving an EVE mail near the beginning so I may redo it sometime soon if I can.

EVE Online needs more Warlords, and it needs them now.

    Posted: 11 Nov 2019 03:13 AM PST

Recently there seems to be an undercurrent of feeling (even from people who are eternally optimistic about the game like myself) that EVE is creeping towards stagnation. While user log-in numbers fluctuate based on in-game events or post eve-meet optimism, and the number of people actually in space blowing each other up isn't particularly unhealthy (although the balance has shifted heavily towards inconsequential pillow fighting), there hasn't been any significantly newsworthy political moves or wars for quite some time. The last big 'war' was a complete damp squib as GSF and friends wiped out half of Panfam's sovereignty holdings without anything particularly interesting happening. For me that war was a defining moment that marked the undisputed passing of EVE into a Cold War era of politics run by administrators and empire builders who 'allow' the smaller entities between them to exist because they don't have a need to expand further than their super umbrellas. Who holds the balance of power globally now rests with who has the biggest super capital blob, and who has local power is determined by who has the largest time zone spread (see Test vs Frat).

Currently CCP are focusing a reported 80% of their developer time into stopping the 'bleeding' of new players trying the game and 20% for keeping us bitter vets happy. Whilst this makes sense from a logical perspective when you see how many people don't make it past the tutorial, it seems totally counter to what CCP itself recognises that eve needs. CCP Ghost's excellent presentation summed up the research he has been doing about the type of player that plays eve, and in summary (but I urge you to watch the whole thing) the type of player that sticks at eve long term is one that likes to be part of something meaningful, and that commits time towards something that gives them purpose – in eve this is usually defined by giving up a lot of time relative to the amount of game time you have available to support a likeminded group of people. He also highlights that it's the intensity of experience that bonds people together, and that war is by far the best method for creating these experiences. What if getting over the 'hump' for the new player has absolutely nothing to do with the new user experience, but everything to do with having a purpose to aspire to? It seems pretty obvious to me that to rejuvenate the political landscape in EVE again we need more meaningful war at every scale. Not just between super coalitions, but at every scale right down to low-sec pirates scrapping over control of a system to camp.

There seems to be a lot of debate recently over what mechanics would be helpful to drive war, common themes seem to be depleting resources forcing blocks to move, passive resources for groups to claim to sustain themselves, or huge bounties in the form of asset drops. More of all of these would be great, but ultimately it's not the 'what' that drives war in EVE but the 'who'. This concerns me because there seems to be a lot of bleeding recently of the type of player that wants to fight their neighbour simply because EVE is the most interesting game of 4d chess they can get their hands on. I call these people the warlords of eve, and they are often very familiar names who fulfil the Wikipedia definition of the term warlord. Recent big names from Snuffbox & skill urself hanging up their gloves are concerning, however many warlords within the coalitions are also now partially or completely inactive without announcement, and this seems to be a problem also affecting small and medium groups find themselves in a similar position.

Sure there should be farms and fields, but the farmers should not be able to protect themselves by hiding under super umbrellas, time zone tanking or a having a castle on every field. It is clear that warlords do not do well on the CSM - the ones who get elected often rapidly citing frustration or boredom with it and abandoning the process or the game. My appeal to CCP is to reach out to these people and make changes that balances the game more towards their favour, and do it fast. The largest and most memorable battles in eve happen start when some warlord gets an itch they need to scratch and starts pushing until a mistake is made on one side and things explode. There is no wrecking machine without someone to drive it.

Update: Thanks for the Reddit Gold! I see some questions about what should be done to fix everything. My wish is CCP sit down and listen to these specific people I describe. I have a ton of ideas myself, yes, but that's not the point of this post. CCP would do well to listen to Pando's FC chats, they partially inspired me to write this post - https://www.twitch.tv/zehpando

    BLOPSers, Teach Me Thy Ways

    Posted: 11 Nov 2019 12:17 PM PST

    Calling all Black Ops specialists...

I've recently become interested in Black Ops Battleships and have decided to start skilling them. Although it'll be a long time before I can fly them effectively, I'd like to start doing my homework now.

Tell me everything there is to know about Black Ops Battleships and their effective use. Here are some of the things I'm looking for:

    • Your favorite BLOPs BS and its fitting
    • Your favorite covert cyno ship and its fitting
    • Your favorite/most productive hunting grounds
    • The type(s) of targets you're looking for
    • Any special tactics/techniques you employ to catch targets
    • Places and targets you AVOID at all costs
    • Any tactics/techniques for managing jump fatigue/cooldown
    • Route planning and...
    • ...anything else that's even remotely relevant to BLOPsing

Spare me no detail. Enlighten me. Teach me they ways.

    Thank You for not dropping

    Posted: 11 Nov 2019 04:45 AM PST

    Good Day to all

I just want to say a massive thank you to Horde for not dropping this weekend against us.

Our moto once in fleet is that if we kill only 1 thing we have achieved op success.

    Saturday

So Saturday I took out 10 people with a mix of Talwars, interceptor for points and a t2 frig logi. We got really lucky early on. https://zkillboard.com/kill/79805505/ Thank you to the flycatcher for the bubble help. not part of the fleet but we will take wins where we can.

We roam about through Hord's space and eventually get nothing but we push on a little deeper into their space and my interceptor pilot just by luck happen to catch something for us: https://zkillboard.com/kill/79806618/

Now I can tell you by this time we smiling ear to ear. Its getting late and its time to start heading back. We eventually start getting chased by horde but if we can maybe get them split up a little by pulling the frigates away from the main fleet we might be able to get some more kills.

    https://zkillboard.com/kill/79807363/

    https://zkillboard.com/kill/79807497/

Now of course we don't want them to go out empty handed and so i say its time we die in a ball of fire. Nothing faster than a good pod express home so we decide to make a stand but we die proudly:

    https://zkillboard.com/related/30002444/201911092200/

    Sunday

We have been planning a Birthday roam for a corpy called: CoffinQueen.

We wanted to use something similar to the talwars but with a little more tank and maybe a little more dps. We eventually decided to go for a rapid light missile Caracal and so a fleet was put together.

We decided to go back to horde space because of the success of the fleet the day before and so we set off on our way.

Sunday roams are a little quieter and so we make it all the way to our destination with no targets.

We push even deeper into Horde space than before and meet our first victim trying desperate to burn back to the gate in time: https://zkillboard.com/kill/79829384/ (sorry)

Op success and so the call to burn home is made. You never know we might get something on the way back:

    https://zkillboard.com/kill/79830148/

Now when the juicy ship died we where going mental on coms trying to see if we could loot it but a call was made to not loot it for the sole reason that we not here to get rich, we here to get good fights and so we left the wreck so that the capsuleer got his loot or some of it back. (apparently someone in horde shot the wreck by accident.. oops)

Juicy Kills bring fleets and so we noticed a massive fleet undock from the station on grid of the loss. It is time to get out and see who comes with us.

We start burning system to system trying to pull fast tackle off but they seem to not want to follow...

Well, like all things if they will not come to you then you have to go to them. We turn around and head back to the fleet that undocked but as we jump the gate a brutix sitting on the gate got aggressive with a caracal and so could not jump the gate.

    https://zkillboard.com/kill/79830599/

It is time we give back to Horde which they so kindly gave to us.

We warp planets and eventually land at the sun trying to get a few more kills before we proudly go down in a ball of fire.

    https://zkillboard.com/related/30002472/201911102200/

I just want to say a massive thank you to Horde that they never dropped anything on us.

We will always bring you more content if you promise not to drop us.

    Fly safe
