What is a "niche" game mechanic that everyone should know about?

Hello all,

I run abyssal sites as my primary form of income. They're quick, make good isk for being in high-sec, and is reasonably safe provided you aren't an idiot. I've completed at least 1200+ sites since abyss came out a couple years ago so I'm pretty used to them.

I run Abyssal sites in a max damage Ishtar. It can reliably do T5 exotic, electrical, and gamma, and T6 electrical and exotic. The fit is below. it does 699 DPS with perfect drone skills and 5 berseker II's, the lowest damage heavy drone. With Wasp II's, this bumps up to 807 DPS with good tracking and speed.

I've recently been searching for a replacement ship that can do just as good or better of a job and I've found other ships lacking. I ran over the problems and I found that most of the drawbacks deal with damage projection, especially at range. I wanted a cruiser that could do the T5/T6 Firestorms and the T6 gammas reliably. The Ishtar suffers with both of these simply because of the raw EHP you have to chew through. Ogres are also slow as hell so they have a hard time keeping up with the target.

Why the Isthar works so well

With the Ishtar, I can avoid any ewar that would put my tank at risk, most notably neuts. With an 85km range, I can happily sit out and run to all the extra caches of loot while my drones kill anything that might kill me. This means that I am never really in danger, and as long as I kill things in a timely manner, the abyss isn't a problem.

Why all other cruisers suffer

One of the hardest things in the abyss to get over with non-drone ships is the range the weapon operates at. DPS also suffers in other platforms. All other HAC's besides the Cerberus and the eagle just can't operate at range and the eagle is just a piss poor damage platform. Tanky as hell, but damage is anemic. This means that all other ships have to get within ewar range to do it's max damage. Even then, with tracking, explosion radius/velocity, it's harder to apply to smaller things. This is a huge problem with the waves that have a lot of frigates.

Some numbers

I didn't include the Ikitursa in here because I forgot about it until posting this. The low damage spooling to higher damage is a drawback in my mind and it was pretty risky during testing. At least for T6 sites. All of these have the high grade tank implants and 5% weapon damage implants. They also have the 5% damage application implants if they can fit them.

Analysis

As you can see, the DPS on these ships up close can be similar to the Ishtar, but at range, they are at least 100 DPS short of even the lowest damage drone the Ishtar can use. In addition, you have to consider the tracking of these weapons, the neut pressure, and the fact that ewar such as tracking/missile disruption negatively affects these platforms when it doesn't affect drones. These ships are great in some weather environments. The cerb and sac is excellent in Dark, while the deimos with blasters is OK in high level firestorms, the range really fucking hurts with blasters and rails are shit at damage. The iki is pretty good, but the spoolup mechanic means I have to wait to get to an acceptable DPS. This can be a killer in some spawns on high level sites.

Conclusion

If I can choose to sit comfortably at range and do my full dps, I will. It means I have a higher chance of survival. I may not be able to run some sites, but the ones I can run, I have practically 0 chance of failure provided I don't do something stupid. I think drone boats need to be brought back in line with other cruisers in terms of DPS projection at range while also buffing some of the cruisers weapon damage with long range platforms/ammo. The recent buff to the short range weapon platform ammo damage helped, but they still need some love for the long-range platforms. This carries over to the easy ratting ability in null. If I can just orbit at 50 and let drones do all the work and make like 10% less isk an hour, why not?

tl;dr drones go brrzzztttt while other ships go poof in most scenarios for abyss.

You're in a venture. The to get from "here" to "there" you have to go through the gate where asshat camps.

Waiting until tomorrow is not an option. What's your strategy/tactics?

Edit: and what the hell is with pop-up "You have foolishly transgressed....." that appears in the millisecond between when you drop out of warp and get podded.

Pretty sure I may have made someone win eve today.

So I thought I'd give ganking afk orcas a go. I mine myself, so was just trying to reduce some of the 'competition' in my region.

Now my alts skills are no where near enough to be ganking an orca so I settled for taking out mining drones in a frig.

Searched some anoms and found an orca with mining drones ii, orbiting him for about 5 mins, started convo, no response.

Perfect!

Locked up all his drones, still no response.

Blap, blap, blap.

I'm pretty sure I got 3 or 4 drones before concord stepped in. It was another 5-10 minutes before I got an abusive message in local.

The next day comes and I log in, warp to an anom and find him again. Orbit him again and wait, this time it's about 5 minutes before his drones retreat back to the drone bay and some light drones come out. He locks me up preemptively.

This last another minute before a little notification pops up for me. 'Kill right earned'

Oh dear, he didn't just..... yep, yes he did, as I warp off and concord rocks up takes out his orca!

I then spent the next minute explaining he had to actually activate the kill right on me for it to work...

I actually feel pretty bad for the poor sod.
